(Arnolds Park)– A man many lakes area residents considered a hero during the flood of 1993 was honored at Sunday’s military appreciation day at the Arnolds Park Amusement Park.
Colonel Dave Rogers of the Iowa National Guard oversaw emergency projects on the south side of Big Spirit Lake and the Lower Gar Outlet to release water more quickly during the flood.
Rogers was presented with an honorary degree from the Engineering Department at the University of Okoboji and was inducted into the Iowa Navy.
Rogers told KUOO news it doesn’t seem possible it’s been 10 years since the flood. He says it seems like it was only yesterday.
Rogers visited the Lower Gar Outlet while he was in the lakes area over the weekend. He says he’s confident the structures that were installed in 1993 will continue to perform well for years to come, and that the flood of ’93 will never be repeated.
Lynn Wallace, who was Dickinson county’s Emergency Management Coordinator at the time of the ’93 flood, was on hand for Sunday’s event honoring Rogers.
