(Lake Park)– A popular summer attraction in Lake Park will NOT be open this season. Mayor Matt Carstensen tells KUOO news they were preparing to put a new liner in the outdoor pool at the city park, but upon getting ready to do that, they found some major issues…
“Our city crew started tearing the old liner off and once we got the old liner torn off we discovered that the walls on the pool are, there are some areas that are really bad. They’re disintegrating and falling apart. So we now know at this point that any repairs we do will, the time period will not allow us to open up this year. There’s too many repairs that need to be done and we can’t get crews in here quick enough to make those repairs and get open for the summer.”
Carstensen says they hope to have some cost estimates after a consultant looks at the pool…
“They’re going to come up and do some initial surveys and maybe even do some concrete testing to see what type of integrity is left in the structure that’s still standing, and we’ll just have to move forward from there.”
Depending upon those findings, Carstensen says the city council may have some difficult decisions to make down the road…
“I believe that Lake Park wants some type of pool or some type of water attraction. We just have to kind of take a step back and take some time to see how we get there.”
The current pool in Lake Park is some 53 years old.
