ISEA President Visits Northwest Iowa

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The newly-elected President of the Iowa State Education Association was in Spirit Lake Thursday.

Linda Nelson is traveling the state visiting with educators so they can, as she puts it, “put a face on the association’s President”.

In addition to that, Nelson says she’s been getting an earful on various issues. Among them, she says, is ongoing budget cuts from the state. Nelson says it’s time for a shake-up at the statehouse. She says she’ll head up an effort with local educators throughout the state to actively campaign to defeat the re-election efforts of lawmakers that have voted against funding education.

Nelson is also speaking out against the federally mandated No Child Left Behind Act. She says it’s unfair that the program uses only one assessment, and that all students, including those with special needs, are grouped together in the assessment.

Nelson, who’s from Council Bluffs, was elected to a two-year term as ISEA President in April. She’s held the position since June 15th.

The Iowa State Education Association has about 32-thousand members.
