IPERS To Come Under Review

November 23, 2014

(Des Moines)– The Iowa Public Employee Retirement System, or IPERS, is about to come up for its regular review.

State Senator Jack Kibbie of Emmetsburg serves on the Public Retirement Systems Committee. He tells KUOO news the system is routinely reviewed every year and-a-half to make sure it’s working the way it’s supposed to.

Currently, Kibbie says IPERS recipients can only earn 14-thousand dollars a year in public employment and still draw from the system. The issue, he says, is whether or not that limit should be increased or the cap taken off completely. Kibbie says the proposed change stems from some retired teachers wishing to get back into the profession atleast on a part-time basis.

Some 220-thousand Iowans draw from the IPERS system…including public school teachers, state employees, county employees and other public workers.

The committee’s report will be submitted to the legislature when it convenes in January.
