(Wahpeton)– Sailers from throughout the upper midwest and as far away as Georgia have converged on the Iowa Great Lakes.
Lakes Area resident Phil Petersen is helping coordinate the Inland Lake Yachting Association’s annual Class MC Invitational Regatta going on now through Saturday on West Lake Okoboji.
Petersen says 50 sailboats are expected to be registered for the competition, which starts with the first race at 10:15 a.m. this (Thurs.) morning. Petersen says there will be one, two or three races today (Thurs.), Friday and Saturday depending on weather conditions.
Petersen says spectators will be able to keep up with the action prior to the start of the races by tuning a VHF Marine Band Radio to channel 72.
Speed boats are being requested to stay out of the area in which the regatta is being held.
This is the first of three regattas the Iowa Great Lakes will host this summer. The Interlake Regatta will be held August 5th through the 8th on West Lake Okoboji along with the North America Regatta August 13th through the 15th.
