(Arnolds Park)– Get the ice fishing gear ready–the Iowa Great Lakes are officially frozen up for another season.
Kirk Ewen of Arnolds Park tells KUOO news West Lake Okoboji was completely covered with ice this (Friday) morning, while East Lake Okoboji has been totally frozen already since December 14th.
Those dates are pretty much on target with traditional averages and a little later than a year ago when East Lake froze over December 11th and West Lake December 12th.
Even though the lakes are frozen, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says anyone venturing out onto them should use extreme caution and even avoid some areas where it’s still very thin.
