(Spirit Lake)– A massive upgrade is in the works for Spirit Lake’s water treatment plant.
The city council Tuesday held a public hearing on plans and specifications for the project. It has an estimated cost of 2.65 million dollars. The city has applied for a surface water grant through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources that would help offset that. As a result, Public Works Director Todd Dolphin says there should be no effect on water rates. That could change though if the grant is denied.
Dolphin says they plan on adding a carbonated filtration system and ozonation equipment will be updated.
Dolphin says the changes are needed to meet new requirements from the D-N-R.
A bidletting on the project is set for May 28th. Construction could start as early as this summer.
