(Des Moines)– State officials are continuing to look at ways to improve guidelines in reporting child abuse.
They’re looking at new guidelines and training for mandatory reporters such as doctors and teachers.
The present system came under heavy fire after the death of two-year-old Shelby Duis of Spirit Lake.
Medical personnel had examined the toddler the day before she died…but nothing was reported.
Vern Armstrong of the Iowa Department of Human Services says the new guidelines are expected to be issued sometime early next year.
Among other things, Armstrong says the revamped system will give mandatory reporters access to a network of experts.
