(Undated)– The Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club will be holding youth fishing events at Stolley’s pond in Spencer and at Isthmus Park on the north end of East Lake Okoboji. The event at Stolley’s Pond is today (Wed. 5/3); the event at Isthmus Park is scheduled for Wednesday, May 17th. The events will begin with registration at 4:30 pm on the respective days. Club member Dean Jacobson says the events are free to youth…
“Every kid will go home with a pan fishing rod and reel at the end. The DNR will be there to do a fish I.D. and then we’ll do the fish cleaning and they’ll do a water safety as well. At Stolley’s we’ve had over 100 kids in the past and we hope to have a great turnout at Dickinson county as well.”
Club member Terry Thompson says the idea for the Dickinson county event came from public feedback…
“Since we’ve sponsored a booth at the Okoboji Bluewater Festival, parents have come up to us and asked us to do an event in Dickinson county, so it’s in response to parents wanting something for their kids in Dickinson county, so that’s where this grew.”
On another note, Thompson says the Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club will be active as well with Walleye Weekend. He says they’ll be helping anglers participating in the “Biggest Walleye Tournament” with the “Fish Donkey App”…
“It’s a program where they take a picture, send it in to the app, and the app will record your fish. Basically it eliminates any cheating, if there ever was any, but it’s pretty simple. So we’ll have club members at all of the bait shops trying to help with that app and for the club member who catches the biggest walleye we have a nice rod and reel combo, so a little incentive for the club members to go fishing.”
Thompson says the Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club will also be helping out with the 2023 Iowa Highschool and Junior Bass Fishing Tournament May 20th on East and West Lake Okoboji…
“For a kid to enter this you have to be a member of the Bass Federation so if you’re a kid and your parent is a member of the club we will sponsor that $25 membership into that Bass Federation, so it’s a little bit of incentive to join our club.”
