Hwy 18 Collision Sends One Person To Hospital

November 22, 2014

(Hartley)– A two-vehicle collision Wednesday on Highway 18 two miles west of Hartley sent one person to the hospital.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office says vehicles driven by 17-year-old Shelby Hakeman and 15-year-old Blake Solsma both of Sanborn were eastbound on Highway 18.

Authorities say Solsma was slowing and stopping for a vehicle in front of him that was attempting to make a left-hand turn. Authorities say Hakeman failed to see Solsma was slowing down and struck the rear of Solsma’s vehicle.

Hakeman was taken by private vehicle to the Sheldon Hospital with non-incapacitating injuries. Possible injuries were reported to a passenger in Hakeman’s vehicle, 14-year-old Amber Buren of Sanborn. No injuries were reported to Solsma.

$1,500 in damage was estimated to a 1994 Ford Taurus driven by Hakeman and to a 1998 Buick Park Avenue driven by Solsma.

The collision took place around 8:00 a.m.
