(Arnolds Park)– A loud boom will be missing from this year’s University of Okoboji Iowa Great Lakes Winter Games.
Officials with the Iowa National Guard have told organizers they will NOT be firing a howlitzer during Saturday’s opening ceremonies which have been moved from Smith’s Bay to the green space at Arnolds Park. Guard officials are concerned that loud reverberations from the howlitzer would break windows in nearby homes.
The color guard, burning of the greens, and other opening ceremony events will go on as planned.
