Hog Producers Scramble Before New Regulations Kick In

November 23, 2014

(Undated)– Time is quickly running out to get new and expanded hog operations constructed before new regulations take affect in Iowa.

A recent report says the Iowa Department of Natural Resources has approved 110 new confinements and expansions that will NOT have to meet the tougher guidelines passed this year by the Iowa Legislature because they will be built before the new regulations take affect.

Here’s a rundown on the number of expansions and new projects approved in our area: Lyon county had nine; Sioux county had eight; seven were approved for Buena Vista county; Palo Alto county had six; O’Brien four; Clay and Emmet counties each had one and Dickinson county none.

The applications were made in April…just before Governor Vilsack signed the bill implementing the tougher standards.

D-N-R officials say the number of applications was triple the usual number for the month.
