Hit & Run Boat Crash Kills One, Seriously Injures Another

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A 51-year-old man was killed and his wife seriously injured early this (Fri.) morning when the boat they were in on West Lake Okoboji was hit from behind by another, which then fled the scene. The injured person was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital. No names were being released pending the notification of family members. They were with four other people on the boat who were not injured.

Gary Owen of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the collision took place shortly before 2:00 a.m. just off of Village West. He says both boats were northbound when the second boat came from behind and went over the top of the first boat which was traveling about 15 to 20 miles-per-hour. The suspect boat continued north following the collision.

Authorities are looking for a 22-foot runabout boat with a predominantly white hull and red stripes six to eight inches wide and about a foot apart. Anyone having seen a boat matching that description should contact the Dickinson County Communications Center immediately at 336-2525.
