(Arnolds Park)– Authorities today discovered where that wastewater that’s been oozing up through highway 71 at Ackley Street in Arnolds Park is coming from.
City Administrator Ron Walker tells KUOO news a subcontractor didn’t hook up a business to a new sewer main that was put in when the Highway 71 project was done several years ago. Instead, the line was still hooked to an old tile line that was abandoned. Officials speculate the old line broke and that the wastewater is just now making its way to the surface. Because the business doesn’t have a basement, the sewage didn’t back up.
Walker says the business will be hooked onto the new main tomorrow and the highway will be patched. In the meantime, northbound traffic through that area of Arnolds Park is being detoured on side streets.
Meanwhile, officials are wondering if there are any more similar cases. It was discovered that a church didn’t hooked up to the new line shortly after the highway was done. The problem was discovered much earlier there because wastewater backed up into the basement.
