Highway 71 Bypass Of Iowa Great Lakes Shelved For Now

November 23, 2014

(Sioux City)– For years, controversy raged over whether a Highway 71 bypass should be built east or west of the Iowa Great Lakes. The Iowa Department of Transportation has now put the controversy to rest. Dakin Schultz, a field services coordinator for the D.O.T’s regional office in Sioux City, tells KUOO news commissioners have shelved it altogether…putting it on a list of “inactive projects”. Schultz says just because it’s on that list doesn’t mean the project is completely dead, though. He says it could be revived sometime in the future if finances allow.

Schultz adds the Spencer bypass remains on the list of active studies. It’s still tentatively scheduled for construction sometime in 2004 or 2005.
