High Wind, Problem With 69KV Line Causes Lakes Area Power Outages

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A combination of high wind and a problem with a primary transmission line resulted in power outages that affected portions of the Iowa Great Lakes Area early this (Mon.) morning.

Officials with Alliant Energy say a ground wire broke on a 69 kilovolt transmission line near Cycle Country on the north edge of Milford. That, combined with strong wind, knocked out power to the southern portion of Spirit Lake, Okoboji, Arnolds Park, West Okoboji and Wahpeton.

The outage in Spirit Lake only lasted about seven minutes. But it was considerably longer in other places. Power was out in Arnolds Park for nearly an hour and slightly more than an hour in Wahpeton.

The outages were reported between 1:00 and 2:30 a.m. Thunderstorms were moving through the area at the time.
