Heavy Rains Overwhelm SL Sewers; Sewage Bypassed Into East Okoboji

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– People are being told not to come into contact with the water in East Lake Okoboji in Spirit Lake.

Public Works Director Todd Dolphin says the city was forced to bypass wastewater into the lake from lift stations at the ends of 12th and 15th streets to prevent further sewage back-ups into homes.

There’s no word as to how much sewage went into the lake. The bypassing has since ended.

Dolphin says the city notified the Iowa Department of Natural Resources about the matter and they’re closely monitoring the lake.

Extremely heavy rains the last several days maxed out the city’s sewer system, causing waste water to back-up in some people’s basements.

City crews spent a portion of the day today (Fri.) pumping out man holes.
