(Spirit Lake)– Ground was broken this (Sat.) morning on the new YMCA of the Okoboji’s being built just south of Spirit Lake.
Leo Kofoot, President of the YMCA Board of Directors, told the gathering the dream of a year-round YMCA started five years ago when they were working on a long range plan. Kofoot says at the time, even they doubted such a project would be feasible. But he says a lot of hard work and perserverance paid off, making the dream become a reality.
Kofoot says even though construction is about to start, fundraising for the new YMCA continues. He didn’t give an exact dollar amount on what’s been raised so far, but Kofoot says they’ve reached 90 percent of the 6.2 million dollar goal.
Kofoot also announced the new YMCA will be named in honor of the Bedell family for its contribution of two million dollars.
The YMCA is being constructed on 25 acres of land on 235th Avenue adjacent to the bike trail just south of Spirit Lake. The land was donated by the Hoien family.
Construction is expected to take more than a year.
A fitness center and full length indoor pool are just a couple of the amenities to be included in the facility.
