Gilbert Park Grant Request Rejected

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A setback for plans to revamp Spirit Lake’s Gilbert Park. The city had applied for a 75-thousand dollar grant through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ REAP program to rennovate a shelter house. Unfortunately, Public Works Director Todd Dolphin says the application has been denied.

In addition to improving the shelter house, plans also called for the construction of a restroom facility, trails, lighting, parking and a sand volleyball area with a total price estimated at between 190-thousand and 195-thousand dollars.

Dolphin says the city’s Betterment Committee is assessing its options and is expected to make a recommendation to the council as it starts its annual budgeting process.

Dolphin says the city thinks it’s important to rennovate the park due to its historic significance.
