Gephardt Visits Spirit Lake

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Democratic Presidential hopeful Dick Gephardt made a campaign stop in Spirit Lake Monday.

Gephardt outlined a very aggressive agenda both domestically and internationally.

He made a special effort to bash President Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthy. Gephardt pledged to do away with them if he gets elected. He says he’d use the money those taxes would generate to pay for a universal health care plan.

Gephardt also outlined an ambitious energy plan. He says the goal would be to make the U-S independent of mid-east oil within 10 years by converting on a large-scale basis to renewable energy…including solar, ethanol wind, soy diesel, etc. He said Iowa would be at the epicenter of the effort due to the abundance of corn, soybeans and wind.

Gephardt also said he’d overhaul foreign trade agreements put in place by the Bush administration.

And when it comes to agriculture, Gephardt said he’s in favor of a packer ban on ownership of livestock and is in favor of point of origin labeling. He also said more needs to be done when it comes to corporate responsibility to prevent more Enron-types of scandals from happening.

Gephardt was accompanied on his visit by his wife, Jane.
