Free Camping Weekend At State Parks

November 22, 2014

(Wahpeton)– A weekend of free camping this weekend at Iowa’s state parks…including those here in the Iowa Great Lakes Area…should make for some happy campers.

Ron Williams, a local park ranger for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says it’s the state’s way of thanking campers for their support in the past and to welcome new campers.

Williams says they’re also working with the Dickinson County Conservation Board to put on some interpretive programs this weekend. Saturday’s programs include one titled “warbler talk” with Ed Thelen at 8:00 a.m. at the Hogsback Wildlife Area; a birding hike with Lee Schoenewe at 1:30 p.m. at Elinor Bedell State Park; a trumpeter swan release at 3:00 p.m. at Kettleson Hogsback or Marble Lake; and a campfire chat about Iowa’s state parks and a review of public areas in the Iowa Great Lakes at 7:00 p.m. at Gull Point State Park Campground. A wild edibles program and hike will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday at the Barney Peterson Nature Trail at Gull Point.

The free camping this weekend at state campgrounds is open to Iowa residents only.
