(Harris)– A piece of local history could be seen moving down area roads today (Thursday).
The former Milwaukee Road Railroad depot in Fostoria has been purchased by the Iowa Northwestern Railroad. It was moved today (Thursday) to Harris.
John Larkin of the Iowa Northwest Railroad says the depot, no longer an image of its former self, will be rennovated to look like it originally did. The building has been covered with sheet metal and was being used by an elevator after being abandoned by the railroad. Larkin says they’ll remove the sheet metal and replace the siding…completely restoring it to look like the original depot.
He says the Iowa Northwestern plans to use the depot as a souvenir shop and office to sell tickets for rides on the railroad’s passenger excursions from Harris to Spirit Lake, and from Spirit Lake back to Harris. The railroad plans to add “appetizer” and “dinner” runs to this summer’s schedule, along with regular excursions starting Memorial Day Weekend.
