Former Owner Of Lakes Area Newspapers Passes Away

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– A former owner of some lakes area newspapers has passed away.

Olive Schuneman, known by most residents as “Bunch”, passed away Monday at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake. She was 97.

Bunch graduated from Spencer High School in 1925. She went on to college where she earned an Associate of Arts Degree. She taught grade school in Illinois and Spencer before moving to Spirit Lake in 1932 when she married Art Schuneman, a foreman at what was then the “Spirit Lake Beacon”. They moved to Milford and purchased the “Milford Mail”, working as editor and publisher until 1958. The Schunemans then founded the “Okobojian” in 1945 and later acquired the “Terril Record” and “Arnolds Park News” which were incorporated into the “Milford Mail”. The papers were sold to W.E. Beck in 1958.

Bunch was very active in the community, having served on the Milford Library Board and what was then the Milford School Board. She was also active as a member of the Union Memorial Church and was a member and past officer of the D-A-R.

Bunch was preceded in death by her husband, Art, in 1987 and is survived by one son and his wife and two grandsons.

Turner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
