(Algona)– Former Kossuth County Sheriff Kevin Van Oterloo has pleaded guilty to three felony counts of theft, misconduct in office and forgery.
Van Oterloo entered the written plea Monday. It it’s accepted, he could be sentenced to up to 20 years in jail and fined up to 25-thousand dollars. He could also be ordered to pay restitution of up to 101,330-dollars to Kossuth county.
Van Oterloo resigned as sheriff in March after admitting he used a county credit card to purchase personal items.
A State Auditor’s reported released in June alleged Van Oterloo misappropriated more than 94-thousand dollars in county funds between 1998 and April, 2002. The report also accuses Van Oterloo of making more than 9,891-dollars in unauthorized credit card charges. The report also identified slightly more than 94-thousand dollars in funds that had been collected but were never deposited in county accounts, along with unauthorized disbursements from county funds.
A hearing on Van Oterloo’s plea is set for 9:30 a.m. December 2nd in Kossuth County District Court.
