(Spirit Lake)– Five people were injured in a two vehicle collision Tuesday evening at the junction of Highways nine and 71 north…or the Jackson “Y” east of Spirit Lake.
The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office says 31-year-old Joel Gonzales of Petersen was southbound on Highway 71 and went into the intersection with Highway nine when he collided with a vehicle driven by 62-year-old Sharon Schutt of Spirit Lake. The impact caused both vehicles to wind up in the ditch on the south side of the intersection.
Schutt and Gonzales were transported by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare with varying degrees of injuries.
41-year-old Stuart Kruse, a passenger in the vehicle driven by Schutt, was also taken by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare, along with 18-year-old Anna Magaly Duarte Rodriguez Gonzales and three-year-old Francisco Joel Gonzales…passengers in the vehicle Joel Gonzales was driving. They’re both from Petersen. An address for Kruse wasn’t available.
Gonzales was charged with a stop sign violation and for having no driver’s license.
Seven thousand dollars in damage was reported to a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Gonzales and to a 1995 Ford Explorer driven by Schutt.
The mishap took place around 6:20 p.m.
