(Spirit Lake)– An early afternoon fire today (Tues.) resulted in the evacuation of some residents at the Sunrise Senior Housing Complex at 2300 23rd Street in Spirit Lake.
Fire Chief Wally Jorgenson says his department was called to unit 28 of the complex around 1:20 p.m. Upon arrival he says firefighters encountered flames near a stove in the kitchen. He says they were able to quickly knock the down the blaze.
The unit was being occupied by Mary Edwards, who was taken to Dickinson County Memorial Hospital to be checked over for possible smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.
Several residents in adjoining units were evacuated for a short time but were allowed to return later.
Extensive fire and smoke damage was reported to the kitchen area of the unit with smoke damage in the remainder.
The exact cause wasn’t immediately certain, but Jorgenson says it apparently started in the kitchen area.
The Spirit Lake Fire Department was on the scene about 45 minutes.
