(Undated)– This week (10/05-10/11) has been designated National Fire Prevention Week.
Spirit Lake Fire Chief Wally Jorgenson says it’s a good time to replace the batteries in your smoke detectors and to test them. He strongly urges anyone who doesn’t already have a smoke detector to get one.
Jorgenson says you should also look around your home for fire dangers, and eliminate them. If you’re not sure what to look for you should contact your local fire department. Jorgenson says they’ll be more than happy to come to your home to help you identify potential hazards, and suggest ways to eliminate them.
While you’re replacing the batteries in your smoke detector, Jorgenson says you should also put new ones in carbon monoxide detectors…and make sure they work. That’s especially important with the start of the heating season.
Businesses, industries, and those who oversee other public and governmental buildings are urged to conduct fire drills as well this week.
Jorgenson also encourages families to put together an escape plan in the event a fire breaks out in your house.
