Fire Heavily Damages Construction Trailer

November 23, 2014

(West Okoboji)– A fire early this (Tues.) morning heavily damaged a construction trailer in West Okoboji.

Milford Fire Chief Don Eckard says firefighters were called to 2304 Okoboji Boulevard around 4:00 a.m. Upon arriving, Eckard says the trailer, owned by Vales Construction of Ocheyedan, was completely engulfed. Eckard says firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze without injury, even though explosions were taking place as cans of spray paint and other volatile chemicals in the trailer exploded in the extreme heat.

Eckard says the trailer and its contents, estimated at roughly 20-thousand dollars, were destroyed. He says the heat was so intense it completely melted some fiberglass ladders.

Eckard says spontaneous combustion is the likely cause of the blaze, as there was no electricity going to the trailer.

Milford firefighters were on the scene slightly less than an hour this morning.
