(Spirit Lake)– The cause of a fire that damaged a Spirit Lake apartment Sunday is under investigation.
Spirit Lake Fire Chief Wally Jorgenson says firefighters were called to unit 30 at Sunrise Apartments at 2300 23rd Street around 1:00 p.m.
Upon arriving, Jorgenson says there was a lot of smoke in the apartment with little in the way of actual fire. He says the fire started in the kitchen…possibly on the stove. From there, Jorgenson said it spread to a cupboard above the stove. The fire, which was contained to that area, was quickly extinguished. Smoke was present in the rest of the apartment and a neighboring one.
Jorgenson says someone had been in the apartment, then briefly left…only to discover the fire upon returning. The man…who’s name wasn’t immediately available…was taken to Lakes Regional Healthcare for treatment of a burn to one of his hands.
Jorgenson says the exact cause of the fire is under investigation. The State Fire Marshall’s Office is assisting.
The Spirit Lake Fire Department was on the scene about a half hour Sunday afternoon.
