Fire Causes Minor Damage To Exterior Of SL Business

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake Fire Department was called to the scene of a minor fire Saturday afternoon on Highway 71 south in Spirit Lake.

Fire Chief Wally Jorgenson says firefighters were called to Newman’s Cakes and Crustaceans/Okoboji Lobster and Wine Company around 2:20 p.m. Jorgenson says a fire was burning on the southwest corner of the building’s exterior. Jorgenson says employees were putting water on it, keeping it under control until firefighters arrived. The fire had spread to the underneath of a nearby storage area as well. It was also quickly extinguished. Only minor damage was reported to the building’s exterior. There was no damage at all to the interior, and it’s business as usual.

Jorgenson says a discarded cigarette that started some cardboard and other debris on fire is the probably cause. He says it was very windy at the time, and that could have assisted in helping fuel the fire.

Spirit Lake firefighters were on the scene about 40 minutes Saturday.
