(Spirit Lake)– Some major improvements could be in the offing for a heavily traveled road between Spirit Lake and Orleans.
The Dickinson county board of supervisors Tuesday authorized County Engineer Dan Eckert to apply for a 300-thousand dollar federal transportation grant to upgrade Peoria Avenue between 15th Street in Spirit Lake and County Road M-49 or old Highway 276 in Orleans.
If awarded, Eckert says the grant would cover 60 percent of the project cost, with the remaining 40 percent being split between the the county and the cities of Spirit Lake and Orleans.
Eckert says the project would include some grading work to improve site distances at intersections, along with reconstruction of the pavement.
He says the 2007 construction season would be the earliest the project could be carried out.
