(Des Moines)– Governor Tom Vilsack is seeking a federal disaster declaration in Clay and three other counties to help farmers recover from crop losses. The other counties are Dubuque, Harrison and Monona.
Vilsack says alfalfa hay yields have been cut in half in the four counties because of dry weather this summer.
If the Governor’s request is granted, farmers in the four counties could apply for low-interest loans through the U-S Department of Agriculture.
Earlier this week the U-S-D-A declared 16 Iowa counties disaster areas. None of those are in northwest Iowa.
