Father, Son Fall Through Ice On Five Island Lake

November 22, 2014

(Emmetsburg)– Authorities suspected it would happen–it was just a matter of where and when someone would fall through the rapidly deteriorating ice that’s on area lakes.

It happened around 6:00 p.m. Sunday on Five Island Lake in Emmetsburg.

Palo Alto county authorities say they were called to the 3400 block of North Huron in Emmetsburg on a report of a man in the lake.

Authorities say 37-year-old Jim Smith of Bancroft and his 11-year-old son Logan had been ice fishing when they fell through the ice.

Upon arriving authorities say Logan Smith had made it to shore but Jim Smith had to be rescued by the Emmetsburg Fire Department’s Ice Rescue Team.

The two were checked out on the scene by paramedics and released.

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Emmetsburg Fire Department, Emmetsburg Police Department and the Emmetsburg Ambulance along with citizens Darryl Holcomb, Troy Satern and Butch and Angie Hetrick.
