Fat Spill In Sheldon Clogs Storm Sewer

November 22, 2014

(Sheldon)– State environmental officials say atleast 200 gallons of animal fat has been filled into a storm sewer in Sheldon.

The accident happened Thursday when a hose separated from a truck owned by Neal Anthony Trucking of LeMars.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the truck was delivering the animal fat to the Midwest Farmer’s Co-op in Sheldon.

More fat may have been spilled, but all of it didn’t enter a nearby storm sewer, where much of what was spilled solidified.

D-N-R officials say a small, but unknown amount of the fat reached the Floyd River.

D-N-R officials say a private contractor from Spencer was scheduled to jet clean the storm sewer Thursday night to remove the solidified fat.

Environmental officials are expected to inspect the area as needed.
