(Spirit Lake)– The Iowa Farm Bureau has a message for state lawmakers: don’t balance the budget on the back of property tax payers.
Local Farm Bureau spokesman Wade Nelson tells KUOO news they’re very concerned over a shift in funding expenditures from the sales tax to property taxes and the fact that many expenses are being passed on by the state to the county.
On another issue, Nelson says the Farm Bureau supports a statewide one cent increase in the sales tax for schools so long as the districts are required to hold public votes on how to spend the money.
Nelson is cautiously optimistic the legislature will enact some sort of property tax reform this session.
