Extensive Residential Flooding Reported In Spirit Lake

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Sump pumps are working overtime in many Spirit Lake basements after torrential rains dumped anywhere from eight to nine inches of rain on the region since Monday evening.

Some homeowners are reporting extensive damage from not only water, but also raw sewage that backed up into some basements.

City officials say sewer systems simply weren’t able to keep up with the volume of the water, causing massive backups in some areas.

They’re pleading with residents to refrain from using water as much as possible to give lift stations a chance to catch up.

Flooding problems were most notable on the south side of Spirit Lake between 27th and 30th streets where many yards are under water (see photo).
