Estherville City Council Approves Revisions To Well Head Protection Ordinance

October 22, 2026

(Estherville)– The Estherville City Council Monday held the first reading of proposed revisions to an ordinance protecting the city’s well heads. City Administrator Penny Clayton says the changes are being made at the request of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources…

“It basically says you’re not going to store or use any noxious chemicals within 200 feet of the well beyond what you would normally use for regular usage. Now any pre-existing use or storage, in particular, is allowed, it’s grandfathered in. But you can’t expand on that or add new storage of hazardous chemicals, so. It’s all about water quality, keeping us safe.”

The proposed revisions will come back to the council for additional considerations before final adoption.
