(Spirit Lake)– A Montgomery man is in the Dickinson county jail on charges stemming from a chase early this (Sat.) morning that started in downtown Spirit Lake and wound up in Montgomery.
37-year-old Robert Merle Hurd…aka “Bobby”…has been charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, a felon in possession of firearms, carrying concealed weapons, assaulting an officer, second offense operating while intoxicated and wreckless driving.
Authorities say it started around 1:00 a.m. when a deputy tried to stop Hurd in Spirit Lake for operating a vehicle without tail or license plate lights. A second deputy arrived and noticed a firearm in the vehicle. Hurd was ordered to get out of the vehicle…but refused and fled the scene. The two deputies and police officers pursued Hurd in a chase that went on several streets through Spirit Lake…then west on gravel roads. During the chase, officers observed an item being thrown from the vehicle. The pursuit ended when Hurd pulled up to his residence in Montgomery…where he was apprehended. Two firearms, a trace of what’s believed to be methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were recovered.
The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Spirit Lake, Okoboji, Arnolds Park, Milford and Lake Park Police Departments. The Sheriff’s Office also used it’s infra-red camera in the investigation.
