Drug Conviction Upheld

November 22, 2014

(Des Moines)–The drug delivery conviction of a Spirit Lake man last year has been upheld by the Iowa Court of Appeals.

Fifty-one year old Danny Lee Frerichs of Spirit Lake was convicted of selling methamphetamine by a Sioux County jury in February of 2004.

He appealed his conviction on several grounds; including insufficient evidence. On Wednesday, the Iowa Court of Appeals rejected all of Frerich’s arguments and affirmed his 25-year conviction.

Frerichs was arrested in March of 2003 following a traffic stop on Highway 60 in Sioux County. State Patrol Troopers found Frerichs with a 1/2-pound of meth worth 7-thousand dollars, along with items used to sell the drug. A search of his home in Spirit Lake turned up more evidence of drug trafficking; including measuring spoons with meth residue, scales, and a recipe for making meth.

Frerichs must serve at least one-third of his 25 year prison sentence– or just over 8 years– before he is eligible for parole.
