Drier Weather Allows Better Planting Progress

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Drier weather the last several days has allowed some farmers to finally make progress in the fields with planting and other work.

Paul Kassel, a Crops Specialist with Iowa State University Extension, says progress varies a lot. He says while some farmers are done planting soybeans, others have yet to get started. Overall, Kassel estimates about 50 percent of the beans are in. He expects most of it to be wrapped up by the end of the week if the good weather holds.

While most of the corn is in the ground, Kassel says there will be some re-planting going on in areas that got drowned out.

Meanwhile, some of the corn planted earlier this spring has started to emerge. Kassel urges producers to keep an eye out for any signs of cutworm damage.
