Dogs Brought Back In To Assist In Helmers’ Search

November 22, 2014

(Wahpeton)– The search continues for a 12-year-old Estherville boy who’s been missing since a dock barge he was on sank more than two weeks ago on West Lake Okoboji.

Collin Helmers and 31-year-old Matthew Molacek of Wallingford were on the barge when it became inoperable and started taking on water. It sank off of Gull Point late in the afternoon of October 23rd.

Molacek’s body was found a couple of days after the incident a short distance from where the barge went down.

An ongoing search for Helmers, meanwhile, has been unsuccessful. Specialists from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Search and Dive Team and a side scan sonar specialist from Idaho have had no luck in finding Helmers.

Sunday, cadaver dogs from Codington county, South Dakota returned to West Lake Okoboji to assist in the search.
