(Arnolds Park)– Lower Gar Lake has a pollution problem. The federal EPA has placed it on a list of impaired waterways in Iowa. Officials say it has low levels of dissolved oxygen that’s choking off aquatic life.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources held a public meeting Tuesday with a standing room only crowd on hand to announce a study they’re going to do. Bill Ehms of the DNR says they’ll attempt to pinpoint just exactly what it is that’s causing the problem. He says they’ll thoroughly look at all possible sources…including a large landfill a few miles away. It lies in the heart of the lake’s watershed.
Ehms says the study will start next month and continue through August. He says another public meeting will be held in the fall at which time they’ll report their findings.
