DNR Releases Names Of Those Injured In Sunday Boat Explosion On East Okoboji

November 22, 2014

(Okoboji)– Three people remain hospitalized today (Monday) following Sunday’s explosion of a 35-foot cabin cruiser at a gas dock on East Lake Okoboji.

Injured were 29-year-old Jenny Block and seven-year-old Trevor Holmes…both of Rock Port, Missouri and 51-year-old Jerry Block of Lake Park. They remain hospitalized at Lakes Regional Healthcare with what authorities say are non-life threatening injuries.

32-year-old Jason Gaines of Minneapolis was treated and released.

No injuries were reported to 50-year-old Chris Block and 32-year-old Jeremy Block…both of Lake Park and 31-year-old Molly Gaines of Minneapolis.

Mick Klemmesrud of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources tells KUOO news the cause of the explosion was still under investigation late this (Mon.) morning.

Spirit Lake Fire Chief Wally Jorgenson, who’s department was called to the scene, says it appeared the boat had just taken on fuel when the blast took place.

The boat was destroyed. The Okoboji Underwater Search and Rescue unit assisted in bringing up what’s left of it.

The blast took place around 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
