Diesel Fuel Spill

November 23, 2014

(Milford)..The Milford Fire Department responded to a page at 10:08 Sunday night at Magellan Pipeline on Hiway 71 about 2 miles south of Milford. The Milford Fire Department along with local Police, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Deputies and State Hiway Patrol detoured traffic on Hiway 71 away from the area.
It was found that a one-half inch pipe in a valve structure ruptured. About 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel were spilled. An unknown amount of diesel fuel reached a small tributary of the Little Sioux River as well as the river itself.
Magellan workers have placed absorbent booms across the tributary to prevent disel fuel from heading downstream. The company is pumping up the captured fuel. A special clean up team and equipment has arrived from the Minnesota and Sioux City areas. Winter conditions make recovery of diesel fuel difficult. Ice on the Little Sioux River will make it almost impossible to recover fuel that reached the river. DRN Officials say the circumstances of the spill will be looked into and legal action considered.
The Arnolds Park Police, Milford Police, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department, Iowa Hiway Patrol, Iowa DNR and the Dickinson County Emergency Management assisted the Milford Fire Department on the scene.
