Dickinson Supervisors Consider Leash Law

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Dickinson county supervisors are again looking into the possibility of adopting a leash law.

Supervisor Mardi Allen says she received an e-mail recently from the Moore Lake, Twin Hills and Kelly’s Beach Association requesting the county adopt such a law. The supervisors received a similar request a year ago from residents in the Arthur Heights area.

The supervisors briefly discussed the matter at their meeting Tuesday. Assistant County Attorney Lonnie Saunders told the supervisors they could base the ordinance on zoning, limiting it to areas zoned lakeshore residential. That would make dogs living on farms exempt from the law. However, Supervisor Chair David Gottsche says there could still be a problem with rural dogs wandering into residential areas.

Enforcement would be up to Dickinson County Sheriff Greg Baloun and his deputies.

After further discussion, the supervisors agreed to review some sample ordinances and discuss the issue further in two weeks.

Johnson county is currently the only county in Iowa that has a leash law.
