(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson county board of supervisors Tuesday authorized Sheriff Greg Baloun to apply for some grants through the federal government’s “COPS” program.
Baloun says he’ll apply for two of the grants. The first, he says, would fund a liaison officer in some Dickinson county schools. Baloun says one deputy was stationed in the Harris-Lake Park, Okoboji and Terril schools one day a week last year. He says the grant, if awarded, would provide funding for that program. Currently, the money for it is coming out of sheriff’s budget.
The other grant, Baloun says, would be for an additional deputy. It could be as much as 70-thousand dollars. It would cover the additional position for three years. After that, the county would have to assume the funding. There was some discussion by the supervisors as to whether or not the county could afford that. But the motion was made and passed unanimously to authorize Baloun to atleast apply for the grant.
Baloun says a local match would NOT be required for the liaison officer grant.
