Dickinson Supervisors Again Discuss Road Upgrade Request

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson county board of supervisors again Monday discussed a request from a developer to upgrade a portion of 200th street southwest of Milford to accomodate a subdivision he’s proposing. Rick DeMuth made the request several weeks ago. The supervisors Monday directed DeMuth and his engineer to formally request the improvement through a petition, which is allowed under Iowa law. Under the procedure, the person making the request is obligated to pay 50 percent of the cost, which is estimated at 25-thousand dollars to upgrade a quarter mile. The road is currently dirt. DeMuth wants in graded and graveled. DeMuth has indicated that if he’s required to put in a cul de sac, that he’ll request a half-mile be upgraded.

Supervisors again Monday expressed concern that any upgrade of the road done solely by the county could set a precedence in other areas. But David Stein, an attorney representing DeMuth, said this is a unique situation because the road is already maintained by the county.

Gottsche recommended the petition be presented after the first of the year, when the new supervisors are seated.
