(Spirit Lake)– Dickinson county supervisor Paul Johnson took his crusade for tougher regulations on billboards to Monday’s meeting of the county’s Planning and Zoning Commission.
Johnson has been a strong proponent of tougher standards. He’s concerned the number of billboards could greatly increase in the near future, which he says would degrade from the vistas along the county’s roadways.
One P & Z member, Bill Eich, said that while he also has concern over the potential for more billboards, that the commission should also be careful so as not to put too many restrictions on them, saying he doesn’t find many of the signs offensive. He says he’d feel differently though if there was one every 300 feet or so.
The commission took no action on Johnson’s request for tighter restrictions. They directed Assistant County Attorney Lonnie Saunders to draw up a list of issues the commission will need to address in considering new standards for billboards. The issue will be brought back at the commission’s next meeting in December.
