Dickinson/Emmet Counties Receive VAWA Grant

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson and Emmet County Attorneys offices will share in a grant of nearly 40-thousand dollars to fund a domestic violence prosecutor for the two counties.

Dickinson County Attorney Ned Bjornstad tells KUOO news the money is coming from the Violence Against Women Act, or VAWA. He says the counties will be required to provide matching funds of 25 percent.

In addition to prosecuting domestic violence crimes in Dickinson and Emmet counties, Bjornstad says the person will also be responsible for preparing restraining order applications.

He says the position developed from a series of dialogue between both county attorneys’ offices and the regional Centers Against Abuse and Sexaul Assault…or CAASA.

Bjornstad says having the additional staff person will give the offices a big boost as the caseload continues to skyrocket.
