Dickinson Co. To Participate In Study On New Property Tax System

November 23, 2014

(Des Moines)– Dickinson county is one of four counties to participate in a pilot project to test a new property tax system being proposed for the state of Iowa.

The proposed system is based on square footage instead of valuation.

State Senator David Johnson isn’t sure how long the study will take. He says a committee that will oversee the study just recently held its first meeting.

Johnson says residents of the counties participating in the study won’t be impacted as their property taxes will still be calculated under the current system. He says the committee will collect data from the four counties to determine the impact of the new system and how it compares with the current one.

Johnson is pleased Dickinson county was selected as one of the pilot counties. He says the wide diversity of property types in the county will give the study some valuable input.

He adds the committee will submit its first report to the legislature by October 31st.
